State of Georgia Builds New Data Center with Siemon 10G ip™ End-to-End Network Cabling Solution
WATERTOWN, CT — The State of Georgia recently chose Siemon as the end-to-end structured cabling supplier for its new data center. As this new facility supports the majority of the Atlanta-based state government's critical data transfer and storage needs, the highest levels of performance, reliability and security were required.
To meet these essential criteria, the Georgia Technology Authority (GTA) selected Siemon's 10G ip end-to-end channel solution. "We needed an information transport system that offered performance capable of supporting us for at least fifteen year's worth of expansion and advances in network technology," explained GTA's RCDD and Operations Engineer, Glenn Bishop. "We researched every available option before selecting Siemon."
Keeping both performance and lifecycles in mind, Bishop and GTA specified Siemon's 10G 6™ UTP as the facility's end-to-end copper solution. Siemon 10G 6 cable and connectivity were utilized in conjunction with Siemon MapIT™ patch panels and MapIT enabled patch cords. The MapIT intelligent patching solution provides a unique level of physical layer security, combining connectivity with MapIT analyzers and ITRACS™ Intelligent Patching Software to create a closed loop system capable of real time monitoring and documentation of physical layer connections. Siemon also supports the data center's fiber channels with their XGLO® solution. Utilizing both 50 Micron laser-optimized multi-mode fiber, and 8.3 Micron Low Water Peak single-mode fiber, the 10Gb/s capable XGLO end-to-end solution was also combined with MapIT functionality. "Siemon delivered everything we expected for the information transport system; a copper and fiber cabling plant capable of supporting 10Gb/s, and an impregnable physical infrastructure security solution," Bishop said.
Although performance was crucial, GTA's selection of Siemon went far beyond product alone. Bishop was impressed with the level of support Siemon offered. He described his experience: "In a job of this magnitude, a good partner's support can make or break the entire project. At every critical step, Siemon's team offered and delivered professional and timely support."
Carrie Higbie, Siemon's Global Network Applications Market Manager, provided a good deal of that support, assisting GTA in translating goals into solid design and product choices. "It is a joy working with GTA," Higbie commented. "They are so committed to building a data center to support the state and its people. They did not compromise on anything."
In addition to design and implementation advice, support came in the form of Siemon's extensive network of Certified Installers™ (CI). In order to become a Siemon CI, candidate installers must pass a rigorous, 7-day ISO- certified training program as well as pass re-certification testing every 2 years. With this program in place, GTA was able to narrow the field of potential installers to a highly qualified list of CIs, in the end selecting Integrated Communication Networks, of Atlanta, GA.
GTA's selection of Integrated Communication Networks (ICN) brought additional benefits beyond a high-quality installation. Only installations performed by Siemon CIs are eligible for Siemon's industry-best system warranty, covering cable, connecting hardware, installation, performance, and support of current and future applications. "We put a great deal of thought and effort into finding the best partner for this monumental task," Bishop said. "Choosing Siemon was absolutely the right decision."
